How to Clean a Garbage Disposal

To Loosen Grime

1. Measure half a cup of baking soda and dump it into the disposal.
2. Measure one cup of vinegar (white is best) and pour it down the drain where the baking soda is waiting.
3. Turn on very hot water and run it for 60 seconds to clear out the baking soda vinegar solution.

To Sharpen and Scrub the Disposal

1. Dump 1-2 cups of ice into the disposal followed by course salt (either rock salt or coarse sea salt).
2. Turn on the disposal and run it until all the salt and ice are gone.

To Deodorize

1. To deodorize your garbage disposal, slice up a citrus fruit (e.g., lemon, orange, lime, grapefruit, etc.) and drop it into a running disposal. Keep the disposal running until the fruit is all gone.
